What Skills Does a Modern CFO Need in 2026

A joint perspective from Finex Advisory and Sensibal Recruitment

The CFO role has changed more in the last few years than in the previous twenty. The modern CFO, whether full time or fractional, is no longer the person who closes the books and reports what happened; they are a strategic partner expected to help shape where the business goes next. In 2026, that shift has only accelerated…

AI and tech advancements is reshaping the finance function, capital is more expensive and harder to get, and Boards expect finance to be forward-looking and commercial.

So what does a modern CFO actually need to succeed? Here are the skills we believe matter most in 2026:

  • Helping run the business, not just report on it. Any accountant can produce monthly accounts. What sets a modern CFO apart is commercial judgement. For example, knowing whether a new contract is actually profitable once you account for the cost to deliver it, whether a price increase will hold, or whether a hire pays for itself. They ultimately shape the decisions, not just report on it.

  • Commercial partnership with the CEO - less "guardian of the numbers," more co-pilot on growth, pricing, M&A, and unit economics. This is especially pronounced in PE-backed businesses where the CFO is expected to drive value creation.

  • Data fluency and analytical rigour. A modern CFO turns messy, high-volume data into decisions. For example, building the KPI dashboards and cohort analysis that reveal what is really driving the business. As well as comfort in stress testing and interrogating a model, and spotting quickly when a forecast clearly doesn’t make sense.

  • AI and automation literacy. In 2026 this is the defining new skill. A modern CFO needs to know where AI and automation can genuinely save time and cost within the finance function, particularly with some of the more manual tasks when it comes to the month-end close. Just as important is knowing its limits. A modern CFO should lead the adoption of tech advancements within the finance function, but needs to thoroughly interrogate the outputs that the tools produce. Not just accepting them at face value.

  • Capital markets, fundraising and M&A capability. Whether raising growth capital or preparing for an exit, the CFO increasingly leads the process or works very closely with advisors, building the equity story, managing investors and acquirers and protecting value through due diligence. This is also the rarest skill on the list. Most finance team have never run a a deal, so when a raise or sale comes round, founders often find that no one in-house can actually lead it. Ultimately this tends to distract other members of the management team, during a process, and can be detrimental for valuation.

  • Communication and storytelling. Numbers only create value when people act on them. The CFO must translate complex financials into a clear narrative that boards, investors and non-finance colleagues can understand and get behind.

  • Team building and talent leadership. Rarely does a CFO deliver alone. Building, developing and retaining a high-performing finance team, and knowing which skills to hire, develop or outsource, is now core to the role. Especially, when finance talent is scarce.

  • Governance, risk and controls. A modern CFO must make sure the numbers can be trusted, the business stays on the right side of its obligations, and the obvious risks, including cyber threats, are being managed rather than ignored. It’s the least glamorous skill on the list, but it protects value, and it’s the first thing an investor or acquirer will pull apart in diligence.

In short:the common thread across all of these is that the modern CFO is measured by the decisions they help the business make, not just the accounts they produce. The technical foundation still has to be there - but in 2026 the skills that set a CFO apart are commercial judgement, comfort with data and AI / tech implementation, and the ability to see and plan ahead.
